Taking the wheel on the road to recovery

"In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists."

In one fell swoop, the COVID-19 pandemic has driven us from our desks and offices; out of airports, restaurants, bars and hotels; away from our friends, families and colleagues. It’s pretty much compelled us into retreat. People speak of a ‘collective pause’ and fret about their productivity. For businessowners – and particularly small businessowners – ‘pausing’ could prove fatal.

Adapt & innovate

It’s in our DNA to adapt, though. We evolved as hunter-gatherers, constantly learning and improving our skills and tools to not only survive, but eventually create a thriving modern society. As the pandemic changes the familiar landscape of society, we’re seeing another evolution take place. Forward-thinking businesses are looking to their strengths and capabilities and reallocating their labour and production to new markets and different avenues for growth. While many companies focus on defensive moves in response to the threat, it’s those who are boldly innovating around emerging opportunities that will leapfrog into the future.

Pivot & partner

At FILTR, we’re not pausing. We’re accelerating our team’s upskilling and fast-tracking our capabilities to play an active role in creating the future of travel retail (because there will be one). The most exciting bit? Partnering with another bold and forward-thinking company – The Moodie Davitt Report – on the Virtual Travel Retail Expo, a pivotal new platform for the industry to gather, discuss solutions and plot a different future together.

As a business, through this initiative, we’re taking the skills of our diverse team of retail and graphic designers, PR practitioners and account managers, and integrating them deeper than ever before to develop an industry-first event that could make a vital contribution to charting a ‘Road to Recovery’ for travel retail.

A new landscape

The Virtual Travel Retail Expo is neither a ‘quick fix’ nor a replacement for existing industry events, but (we hope) a long-term complement to support travel retail stakeholders as we navigate a much-changed landscape. This initiative presents a brilliant opportunity to stay connected despite the global disconnect, to temper obstacles posed by budget, space and time and enable communications between industry partners in a purpose-driven environment.

We’re not reinventing the wheel; we’re adapting it to drive faster, smoother and more efficiently, on a potentially bumpy road, into the future.
